What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.

The law requires the State of California to maintain and publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include over 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.

Important: The presence of a Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe. Many everyday items, including foods, contain trace amounts of listed chemicals. The warning is intended to inform consumers so they can make their own purchasing decisions.

Chemicals in Audio Electronics Products

Car audio electronics, like many consumer electronics products, may contain trace amounts of chemicals that are on the Proposition 65 list. The most common chemicals found in audio equipment include:

Lead and Lead Compounds

Lead may be present in the solder used on circuit boards, in cables, battery terminals, and other electronic assemblies. It is also found in brass fittings and some metal components.

Found in: Amplifiers, subwoofers, speakers, wiring kits, batteries, terminals, and RCA cables.

DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate)

DEHP is a phthalate commonly used as a plasticizer in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products. It makes plastics more flexible and is found in wire coatings, cable insulation, housings, and various plastic components.

Found in: Wire and cable insulation, plastic housings, power cords, speaker surrounds, and carrying cases.

Other Phthalates

Other phthalates such as DBP (di-n-butyl phthalate), DINP (diisononyl phthalate), and BBP (butyl benzyl phthalate) may also be present in plastic and vinyl components used in audio equipment.

Found in: Flexible plastic parts, vinyl coatings, and adhesives.

Nickel

Nickel is used in various metal components and plating processes. It may be present in connectors, terminals, and hardware.

Found in: Metal connectors, terminals, screws, and speaker grilles.

Products That May Contain Listed Chemicals

The following Skar Audio product categories may contain chemicals listed under Proposition 65:

  • Subwoofers - Electronics, magnets, and adhesives
  • Amplifiers - Circuit boards with lead solder, plastic housings
  • Speakers (Coaxial, Component, Marine) - Electronics, magnets, and coatings
  • Tweeters - Electronic components
  • Batteries - Lead acid batteries contain lead and lead compounds
  • Amplifier Wiring Kits - PVC wire coatings may contain phthalates
  • RCA Cables and Speaker Wire - PVC insulation and lead in connectors
  • Sound Deadening Materials - Adhesives and plasticizers
  • Subwoofer Enclosures - May contain treated wood, adhesives, and carpet materials
  • Terminals and Connectors - Lead, brass, and nickel plating

Battery Products - Additional Warning

Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Batteries also contain other chemicals that may cause cancer. Wash hands after handling.

Why We Provide This Warning

Skar Audio, Inc. provides Proposition 65 warnings out of an abundance of caution. Due to steep penalties for non-compliance and because there is no penalty for providing an unnecessary warning, many companies (like Skar Audio) choose to provide the warning even when chemical levels may be below the thresholds that would legally require a warning.

It is nearly impossible to ascertain with 100% scientific certainty whether specific products require warnings, as manufacturing processes and component suppliers may vary. In lieu of testing each of our product SKUs and components individually, we have determined to comply with the law by labeling products with a Proposition 65 compliant warning.

The warning does not mean that our products will necessarily cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. We believe our products, when used as designed and intended, are safe for consumer use.

Safe Use Guidelines

To minimize potential exposure to listed chemicals when handling audio electronics products:

  • Wash hands after handling products, especially batteries, terminals, and wiring
  • Avoid prolonged skin contact with electronic components and circuit boards
  • Work in well-ventilated areas when installing audio equipment
  • Do not ingest any components or allow children to handle small parts
  • Follow all installation instructions provided with products
  • Dispose of products properly according to local regulations for electronic waste

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Prop 65 warning mean your products are unsafe?

No. The presence of a Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe or will cause cancer or reproductive harm. The warning is required by California law when a product contains any amount of a listed chemical, even if the amount is far below levels that would pose any health risk. Many everyday products, including foods like coffee and french fries, carry Prop 65 warnings.

Why do audio electronics contain these chemicals?

Lead has been used in electronic solder for decades because of its excellent electrical conductivity and reliability. Phthalates like DEHP are used to make PVC flexible, which is essential for wire and cable insulation. These materials are industry-standard in electronics manufacturing worldwide.

Are products sold outside California also affected?

Proposition 65 is a California state law. However, many manufacturers (including Skar Audio) choose to apply warnings to all products regardless of destination to ensure compliance and provide consistent information to all customers.

What level of chemicals triggers a Prop 65 warning?

Proposition 65 sets extremely low thresholds for warnings, often 1,000 times lower than levels shown to cause harm in laboratory studies. A warning is required if a chemical exposure exceeds the "No Significant Risk Level" (NSRL) for carcinogens or the "Maximum Allowable Dose Level" (MADL) for reproductive toxicants.

Can I still purchase your products if I live in California?

Yes. Skar Audio products are available for purchase in California. The Proposition 65 warning is provided to inform you about potential chemical exposures so you can make an informed purchasing decision.

Are there lead-free or phthalate-free alternatives?

The electronics industry has made progress in reducing lead content through RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliance. However, completely eliminating all Prop 65 listed chemicals from complex electronic products remains challenging due to supply chain complexities and performance requirements.
